The Christian and Missionary Alliance began its
work in Japan in 1893, just a few decades after Japan opened its doors to the
world. Alliance missionaries settled in western Japan and began evangelizing
this island nation, working hard to train Japanese believers to evangelize their
own nation. The Alliance missionary force in Japan reached a peak of 16
missionaries in the early 1900s, but then completely withdrew from Japan in
1937. In 1952, the Christian and Missionary Alliance resumed work in Japan and
has continued to this day.
Today, the Japan Alliance Mission focuses on evangelism and church planting,
primarily in the Tokyo area. The mission is also involved in leadership training
at the national church's seminary in Hiroshima.
